The increasing rates of violence against women in Yemen require immediate attention and action from both the international community and the Yemeni government. The ongoing conflict in Yemen has created a humanitarian crisis, putting women and girls at a higher risk of violence such as domestic abuse, sexual assault, and forced marriages.
According to a report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), around 50% of Yemeni women have experienced some form of gender-based violence, underscoring the urgent need for measures to protect and support women and girls in Yemen. This violence not only impacts the individuals directly affected but also has wider consequences on their families, communities, and society as a whole.
As renowned writer and women’s rights activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie remarked, “Violence against women not only harms the women experiencing it but also hinders their ability to participate in society, access education and healthcare, and contribute to the economy.” It is imperative that immediate action is taken to address the escalating rates of violence against women in Yemen and provide them with the support and protection they urgently need.
